History

Generation 1

George HOPKINSON was born in 1896 in Hucknall, Nottinghamshire. His parents were Matthew Hopkinson and Margaret (nee BERESFORD). He married Dorothy Mabel SCOTT in 1919 in Bulwell, Nottinghamshire. They had 4 daughters.

Matthew HOPKINSON was born in 1848 in Papplewick, Nottinghamshire. His mother was Phoebe HOPKINSON and soon after the birth she married Edward COULISHER, though it is not certain he was Matthew's father. He married Margaret BERESFORD in 1877 in Basford. Their eldest son, Albert Edward, was born in Papplewick and their eldest daughter, Amelia was born in Darnall, Yorkshire. Both of these children became Mormons and emigrated to the USA before 1901. The next five children were born in Rotherham, Yorkshire and I thought it would be quite simple to find the family in the 1881 census (on CD-ROM). However there was no sign of them, until I searched for Amelia in Rotherham. The family were listed under Smith with the head of the household as William Smith - no Matthew, but all the other details about William were correct for Matthew. Checking the original census records showed that it was not a mis-transcription. There could have been a mis-copying from the house schedule to the census book, or maybe Matthew refused to give his name and they compromised on William Smith!

Phoebe HOPKINSON was the eldest daughter of William HOPKINSON and Ann (nee BRECKNOCK) and was born in 1827 in Hucknall Torkard, Nottinghamshire. She married Edward COULISHER in 1848 in Papplewick, Nottinghamshire. Edward died in 1858 and Phoebe remarried William MILLS in 1865.

William HOPKINSON was born in 1798 in Pilsley, Derbyshire. He married Ann BRECKNOCK in 1823 in Hucknall. They moved to Papplewick where most of their children were born. By 1851 they had moved back to Hucknall Torkard, Nottinghamshire. William died in 1874 and Ann in 1876.
