History

Generation 1

Phoebe HOPKINSON married Edward COULISHER some months after she gave birth to Matthew HOPKINSON. Matthew's eldest son and daughter became Mormons and emigrated to Utah. Therefore the LDS Church is very interested in certainly the HOPKINSONs and also the COULISHERs. They assume (rightly or wrongly) that Edward is Matthew's father.

Phoebe and Edward were married in 1848 in Papplewick, Nottinghamshire. He probably came from Lowdham, as the IGI also has a marriage entry for them there (probably from the Banns register as there is no marriage there). Phoebe was with her parents in the 1851 census, with their daugher Ann (census says born in London, baptism found in Lowdham). Edward was alone in Lowdham. The Lowdham registers have four other children before Edward dies in 1858. Phoebe married William MILLS in 1865.

According to the 1851 census, Edward was born in Hickling about 1830, but there is no matching baptism. There are few COWLISHAW's in Lowdham and I think his parents were William (born 1794 in Lambley) and Ann (born 1791 in Hutton, Leicestershire). According to the Lowdham MI's they also had a daughter Mary (born 1819), again no baptism.
