History

Generation 1

George TURNER was born in 1898 in Salford, Lancashire. His parents were Alfred and Fanny (nee HOLT). George married May CRITCHLEY in 1922 at Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire.

It is not certain where Alfred was born or his name at birth. His birthdate of 1863 is given in the family bible, put probably written in by Alfred later in life. Alfred first appears in the 1871 census as the 8 year old son of Thomas and Eliza TURNER. Thomas and Eliza DICKSON married in 1865 in Salford, Lancashire and had three further children - John Thomas (died in 1950 in Coventry), Elizabeth Ann (married WILLIAMS, a confectioner in Southport) and Mary Emma (died age 5).

However I have not found a birth certificate for Alfred TURNER or Alfred DICKSON nor a baptism. I have looked for baptisms for Alfred, without finding anything under TURNER or DICKSON. I did find a baptism for an Alfred WADDINGTON (father James, a brewer and mother Eliza) with no matching birth certificate and a birth certificate for an Alfred DICKSON (father James, a brewer and mother Eliza nee WORSLEY). The address for both of these Alfreds is Eliza Place, Liverpool Street, Salford.

Alfred married Fanny HOLT at the Primitive Methodist chapel in 1888. Thomas TURNER was born about 1834 in Little Bolton (near Salford) or Bolton, Lancashire. His father was also Thomas.
