History

Generation 1

Thomas HAVENHAND was born in 1857 in Coal Aston (near Dronfield), Derbyshire. His parents were Mark and Sarah Ann (nee HASLAM). He married Sarah Jane SHARPE in 1882 in Sheffield and they had 4 children. She died in 1892 and was buried in Dronfield Cemetery. Thomas later married Ann Elizabeth SHARPE (his deceased wife's niece!) at Chesterfield Register Office in 1895. Their son, Ernest died in the First World War.

Thomas's grandfather was Frederick HAVENHAND. He was born in 1808 in Eckington, Derbyshire, the son of Sarah HAVENHAND. There is a recognisance in the Quarter Sessions naming the father as John BUTTERLEY. Frederick married Judith KAY in 1829 in Sheffield, Yorkshire. When she died in 1877, Judith was the first person to be buried in Dronfield Cemetery, Derbyshire.

I have traced this family back to Thomas, who had two children baptised in Beighton, Derbyshire (not part of Sheffield) - Mary in 1659 and Thomas in 1660. Not all baptisms have been found, but as many of the HAVENHANDs were members of the Cutlers Company of Sheffield, their records provide paternity evidence - Godfrey (1761-1842) and Samuel (1754-1825), both sons of Mark. Samuel was buried in the Quaker Burial ground near Sheffield, though it is not believed that he was a quaker. The family lived mainly in Eckington, though some branches moved into Sheffield.

This is the largest of the three Havenhands family trees and all HAVENHANDs should belong to one of them.

----------------

In the second of the HAVENHAND trees, all the people are descended from Joseph and his three wives. Joseph was born about 1767 and died in 1848 in Dronfield. He married Elizabeth JACKSON in Dronfield in 1790, Sarah JACKSON in 1794 in Sheffield and Mary KING (widow) in 1812 in Dronfield. Joseph may have been the brother of Godfrey and Samuel in the main tree, but as I do not have any of the baptisms, I cannot prove it. Joseph did have a son called Mark (his 3rd son), so could have named him after his father. This small family moved more than the larger one, their records have been found in Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire, Huddersfield as well as Sheffield.

----------------

The third HAVENHAND tree is descended from Thomas (1773-1848) and Jane (nee GRAVIL). There are no known marriages of any of the children, so there may not be any modern descendents.
