Origin of the surname

History

Generation 1

Martha MATHER was born at 36 Tyne Street, Nottingham in 1872 to Rebecca MATHER, silk spinner. The birth certificate does not have the name or occupation of the father, but neither are they crossed out. I have not yet found her baptism.

Martha married John Thomas SCOTT in 1895 in Basford, Nottinghamshire and they had four children before she died in 1902. No father is given on the marriage certificate.

I found a Rebecca MATHER in Beeston, Nottinghamshire in the 1871 census in Beeston as a Silk mill hand with her father John (Chimney sweep), mother Ann and two of John's grand-daughters - Mary A and Rebecca (they could also be Rebecca's daughters). She probably married William GREASLEY in 1873 and is found with him and three children, the eldest is probably Mary A.

Martha is in the 1881 and 1891 censuses as a niece in the household of William BEMBRIDGE in Bulwell, Nottinghamshire (this agrees with family stories). I have yet to find out how she is his niece.
