Origin of the surname

It probably arises from Haresceugh, which is a small group of houses near a 12th century castle - Haresceugh castle, now just an earthwork. It is in Cumberland, on the edge of the Pennines between Penrith and Alston. The surname can be found in different forms—Hairskeugh, Harescough, Hairscough. Haskew may be how it is pronounced.

The earliest recorded parish register entry found so far is 1673 in Penrith - baptism of Thomas, son of Thomas Hairskew and Hellen.

History

The numbers in square brackets refer to the Family Tree (see below).

Generation 1

The earliest person that I can link to is Joseph[199], who married Ann LOSH[1495] in Carlisle in 1701 and by her had 3 children: Their baptisms have not been found nor has the burial of Ann[1495].
In 1725, Joseph[199] married Mary LIDDALL[207] in Carlisle. They had three children: Joseph[199] died in 1737 and his will mentions Joseph[201], Thomas[200], Mary[202], Isaac[206] and Mary[207], his wife. After Joseph[199]'s death, Mary[207] married to Isaac THOMPSON[1493] in 1738.

If Joseph[199] married in 1701 and we assume he was 21 on his marriage, he would therefore be born about 1680. Carlisle records do not show any Josephs born about that time and no HARESCEUGHs before 1673. Investigation has shown that HARESCEUGHs do appear in Penrith and there are a possible baptism in 1681 to Thomas and Hellin HAIRSKEW. Unfortunately, there is a burial of a Joseph HAIRSKEUGH, an infant in 1682.

Generation 2

Children of Joseph HARESCEUGH and Ann LOSH

Thomas[200], married Grace SEWELL[204] at Carlisle, St Cuthbert in 1734 and they had three children: Thomas[200]'s will does not survive but there is a Tuition Bond for the education of Richard[203] and Joseph[205] and an Inventory showing what he owned when he died, including his cows and furniture. It is signed by Joseph[201], his elder brother. With two young children to bring up, Grace[204] married in 1742 to William BATY[1492].

Joseph[201] died in 1751. He was a joiner and carpenter in Carlisle. I presume he did not marry or have children as only his nephews, Richard[203] and Joseph[205] and his sister Mary[202] are mentioned in his will.

Children of Joseph HARESCEUGH and Mary LIDDALL

Isaac [206] was baptised in 1734 in Thursby, a parish south of Carlisle. He was only 3 years old when his father died and in the will he was left one pound 'to be payd by my wife when he coms to the age of 21'. Isaac[206] married Sarah DRAPE[193] in 1759 in Carlisle and they had 10 children: I have not found the burials of either Isaac[206] or Sarah[193].

Generation 3

Children of Thomas HARESCEUGH and Grace SEWELL

Richard[203] was probably also a carpenter as he is bequeathed the contents of his uncle's shop. However he must have moved to London because in 1760, he married Mary SEWELL[3921] at St Botolph without, Bishopgate, London, one of the witnesses being Joseph Haresceugh, presumably his brother[205]. I have not found any children, but there are a few HARESCEUGH marriages in London, who would be about the right age to be Richard's children. Richard[203] is mentioned in two letters written by Richard BAGOT to the Duke of Portland in 1770 replying to a request from the Duke for Richard to be given assistance, in getting a job in the Excise. In the second letter Richard BAGOT writes 'The occasion of gratifying Haresceugh has not yet offered, but he understands from me that I shall support his Petition when it is proper to present it'. Richard became an Excise Office in the 4th Division Candles (when Candles and Soap were taxed) and he appears in the Excise Records (now at TNA), mainly due to periods of absence due to sickness, until he died in 1789. His last entry in the Excise Records records his death and the promotions of other people to fill the vacancies. He was buried at St Leonards, Shoreditch in 1789. In 1792 at St George. Bloomsbury, Middlesex, there is a marriage of a Mary HARESCEUGH[3921], widow, to a Joseph SEWELL[6569].

Children of Isaac HARESCEUGH and Sarah DRAPE

Mary[208], the eldest daughter of Isaac, married Robert TAYLOR, a widower, in 1792 at Holme Cultram (Cumberland). They had at least 4 children.

Jane[209] may have married John DRAKE at St George Hanover Square, London in 1799, as there are few Jane HARESCEUGHs about.

Margaret[210] married James BURDEN in 1810 in West Dean on the Wiltshire/Hampshire border (the boundary goes through the Red Lion in the village). He was a widower and an innholder of Downton, Wiltshire, but he was buried in 1811 at Downton. I do not know what happened to Margaret subsequently.

Of Sarah[211] and William[213] I know nothing.

Ann[3633] married John SEWELL[3634] in 1794 at Kirkbampton, Cumberland.

Isaac[55] married Ann SOWERBY[107] in 1803 in Carlisle. Soon after they must have moved to Hadfield, near Glossop, Derbyshire as their daughters Sarah[68] (born 1805), Margaret[735](born 1808) and son Joseph[50](born 1812) were born there. While Sarah[68] was baptised in 1805, Margaret[735] and Joseph[50] were not baptised until 1821 in Wigton, Cumberland. All the other children were baptised in Wigton - Mary[61], Ann[734] in 1815, though they were probably not twins, and George[43] in 1821 with the older two. The family may have moved to Manchester, as the children were married there from 1829 onwards. Ann[107] died in Manchester in 1860. However I have not found Isaac's death or burial either in the GRO indexes or in Wigton.

Generation 4

Children of Isaac HARESCEUGH and Ann SOWERBY

Sarah[68] married Joseph JONES[66] in 1839. They had 4 known children from the 1851 and 1861 censuses. Her mother, Ann[107], was living with them when she died. Ann[107] is buried in Joseph’s plot in Ardwick Cemetery, along with her daughter Mary[61].

Margaret[735] married Joshua FIELDING[5003] in 1829 in Manchester. I only found out about this marriage recently when searching the 1851 census. The 1851 census of Manchester was badly damaged by water at some stage and many pages are unreadable and therefore have never been seen. The Manchester and Lancashire Family History Society have spent the last 13 years at the National Archives at Kew reading the original books. Using modern ultra-violet lights they have managed to read 80% of the information. I was looking for Ann HARESCEUGH[107] who in 1841 was living with her son George[43], but who died in 1860. I found her indexed as Ann H...eugh living with her daughter Margaret FIELDING. I checked the marriage index for Manchester Cathedral and found Margaret’s marriage in 1829. It had been indexed as Harsceugh.

Joseph[50] was baptised at Wigton in 1821, but he was born at Hadfield in Derbyshire in 1812. He married Maria SCOTT[51] in 1835 at St Mary's church, Manchester (now demolished). They had children: The eldest four children were baptised at New Cross, Manchester. Joseph was a joiner. Between 1841 and 1843, the family moved to Kirkstall, Leeds as Richard Scott[740] was baptised and died there. Joseph[50] also changed his job to schoolmaster and was the Infant School Master at Kirkstall. Their fifth child (born in 1845), Benjamin Braidley[742] had an unusual name and I found that a Benjamin Braidley died in 1845. He was involved in the Bennett Street Sunday School attached to the church at New Cross, Manchester, which educated many children. There was also a Writing School there which aimed at producing teachers. I don't know whether Joseph[50] was educated at the Sunday School or just appreciated Benjamin1856 Braidley. About 1856, Joseph[50] became the Schoolmaster at the National School in Headingley. In 1857 Joseph[50] and Maria[51] were appointed as the master and mistress of the Reformatory School, Adel at a salary of £100 per year, but by 1863 Joseph[50] had been dismissed as Master and he became a manufacturer of Sanitary Ware and Dr Bishops's Sanitory powder. Maria[51] died in 1864 at Milton Place, Burley, Kirkstall aged 32. Joseph[50] remarried in 1866 in Manchester to Sarah SCOTT[74], who appears to be Maria's sister, but they lived in Armley, Leeds. By 1871 they had moved to Rochdale where Joseph[50] was the Manager of the Rochdale Nightsoil Works. There are many letters in the Preston Guardian that mention him. Joseph[50] died in 1883 and Sarah[74] died in 1898 in Leeds.

Mary[61] married George HENSTOCK[59] in 1848 in Manchester. It is not known if they had any children. Mary[61] died in 1860 and was buried with her mother Ann[107] at Ardwick Cemetery.

Ann[734] married Thomas JACKSON[794] in 1838 in Manchester. They moved about Lancashire and even to Leeds, though by 1861 they may have died since three of their children are living with their aunts, Margaret[735] and Sarah[68].

George[43] married Mary Ann WOOLFENDEN[44] in 1839 in Manchester. They had 10 children, five born in Manchester and the younger five in the Ashton under Lyne area: In 1841, George[43] and Mary Ann[44] were living with George's mother, Ann[107], and his sister Mary[61] in Ardwick. In 1851, they were living in 75 Upper Medlock Street, Hulme. George was a carpenter journeyman. By 1853 the family were living in Droylesden and in 1855 they had moved to Audenshaw where they were in the 1861 census. By the 1871 census they had moved to 4 Berwick Street, Chorlton on Medlock where they stayed probably until George died in 1883. Mary Ann[44] moved in to live with Margaret[41] and her family. She died in 1903.

Generation 5

Children of Joseph HARESCEUGH and Maria Scott

Jane[736] was baptised at New Cross, Manchester and died in Leeds.

Sarah[737] was baptised at New Cross, Manchester. She was a schoolmistress and in 1872 had a Ladies School at her father's house in Armley, Leeds. She moved with her father, Joseph[50] to Rochdale, Lancashire. She married William ROWLING[797] in 1874 in Rochdale. Since William came from Adel, Leeds, it is likely that they had met in Leeds and they were living in Leeds in 1881.

Isaac[738] married Mary Pattinson WHITMORE[763] in 1865. He was a commercial traveller. I have not found him in the 1871 census, but in 1881 he was in Newcastle upon Tyne. In each case his wife was at her father's house. but in 1871 and 1881 he must have been travelling at the time without his wife. Mary died in 1890 and in 1893 in Manchester Isaac married Mary Eliza STATHAM [805]. Mary Eliza died in 1918 and Isaac in 1925. They are buried together at Southern Cemetery, Manchester. No children have been found for Isaac by either wife.

Charlotte Ann[739] was the last child to be baptised at New Cross. In 1861 she was a student in training at the Home and Colonial School in Marylebone, London. In 1871 she was a schoolmistress in Manningham, Bradford. Charlotte Ann[739] married in 1880 in Rochdale to William TURNER. He was born in Pudsey, Yorkshire and was a National Schoolmaster. They were in Yorkshire in 1881 and 1891 and appear to have had no children.

Benjamin Braidley[742] was born in Kirkstall, Leeds in 1845. He remained in Leeds when Joseph[50] moved to Rochdale and probably took over his father's business as in 1877 he is listed as B.B Haresceugh & Co, sanitary bucket makers. Benjamin married Louisa BRAMBLES in 1872 in Leeds. They had three sons: The first two were born in Knaresborough; Robert in Leeds. Benjamin died in 1906, but in January 1907 BB Haresceugh & Co was incorporated as a limited company. The Company records are in the National Archives and the shareholders and directors were Louisa, Percy and Robert B. Eventually the company was purchased by Messrs Laycocks of Ashton-under-Lyne in 1930 and was struck off the Companies Register in 1931. Percy[767] died in 1923. He does not appear to have married. Robert Brambles[769] married Margaret BARRACLOUGH[785] in 1909 and had two children. I have not found the death of Harry[766].

Anne Maria[744] was born in Kirkstall, Leeds. In 1871 she was a schoolmistress living with her brother, Benjamin Braidley[742], and his sister, Sarah[737], also a schoolmistress. She moved to Rochdale and then later to Blackpool. She did not marry and died in 1933.

Mary[49] was born in Kirkstall in 1849. She married James Percy WHITTAKER in 1886 in Fylde.

Joseph Scott[748] was born in Kirkstall. He went with his father to Rochdale and married Betsy HALL[802] in 1884. He was a traveller in Rochdale Manure (his father was the Manager at the Rochdale Nightsoil Company). In 1887 he was sacked and then it was found that there was a shortfall in his accounts - the farmers had been paying him for the Manure but he was not passing the money to the Corporation - and he absconded. A warrant was issued for his arrest. I have not found any trace of him subseqently. In 1891, Betsy[802] is living with her mother and sister, given as married not widowed. When she died in 1893 the death certificate states that she is the wife of Joseph Scott HARESCEUGH.

Children of George HARESCEUGH and Mary Ann Woolfenden

Sarah Ann[48] was born in 1841 in Manchester and she married Richard Kay[799] in 1879 in Manchester.

Edwin[741] was born in 1843, married Lucy E Hawson in 1867 and they had 3 children:
Henry[743] married Sarah ORMROD[795] in 1869 at Swinton, near Salford. They had a baby boy in 1871, but he died without being named. They had no other children. After Sarah died in 1882, Henry moved to Cumberland - in 1891 he was in Millom (listed as Askew) and in 1901 in Cleator. He was a clogger and shoemaker. He died in 1903 in Cleator.

Mary Ann[746] was born in 1852 and married Jeremiah John SMITH[796] in 1873.

Fanny[747] was born 1855 and married John TAYLOR[801] in 1881.

Margaret[41] was born in 1857 in Audenshaw, Manchester. She married John HOLLIDAY in 1882 in Manchester.
Clara (born 1859) married Charles H Pinder in 1879 and they had children.

Their last son was George, (born 1861 and died 1913). He married Kate Elizabeth Baker in 1886 and they had 12 children. Their 5th child, Clara, married George E Pegg in 1918 and there are living descendents with whom I am in contact. Mary Ann moved to live with Margaret and John Holliday and is found with them in 1891 and 1901. She died in 1903. George and Mary Ann were married in 1839 in Manchester. They had 10 children. 8 of the children married but I don't have all the spouses. George was baptised (and probably born) in Wigton in Cumberland. His parents were Isaac and Ann (nee SOWERBY). Joseph and Maria (nee SCOTT) had 4 children in Manchester before moving to Leeds, Yorkshire where a further 5 were born. In 1851 he was the Infant School Master in Kirkstall, Leeds, he became a National Schoolmaster in Headingly (now part of Leeds) before becoming the first Master of Adel Reformatory (near Leeds), where the family is found in 1861. Maria died in 1864 by which time Joseph had become the manager of a Sanitary Works. In 1866 he was back in Manchester where he married Sarah SCOTT (sister of Maria?) and then moved to Rochdale, Lancashire where he died in 1883. Isaac and Sarah (nee DRAPE) married in 1759 in Carlisle and had 9 children baptised (or buried) in Carlisle between 1760 and 1780, but in 1772 they had a daughter, Ann, in Scotland. Isaac was baptised in 1734 in Thursby, Cumberland. His father Joseph died when he was three years old and in his will leaves him one pound to be given to him when he is 21. Isaac's father, Joseph, married twice. He and his first wife, Ann LOSH (married in 1701 in Carlisle), had at least three children, but I have not found their baptisms. Joseph, Thomas and Mary are mentioned in his will and were probably more than 21 as their age is not mentioned (unlike that of Isaac). Ann must have died before 1725 when Joseph married Mary LIDDALL and they had three children (Ann 1726-1731, John born 1731 died before his father) and Isaac). His widow, Mary, married Isaac Thompson in 1738. Assuming that Joseph was at least 21 when he married Ann LOSH, he must have been born about 1680 (there is a baptism of Joseph, son of Thomas Hairskew and Hellin his wife in Penrith, Cumberland in 1681).
