Origin of the surname

History

Generation 1

Annie COCKERILL, was born in Harwood-dale, Yorkshire in 1841. Her parents were Joseph COCKERILL and Ellis (nee BODDY). Ellis died soon after Annie's birth and Joseph married again to Mary HUNTER. In all, Joseph had 16 children. Annie's brother moved to Falsgrave, Scarborough and Annie is found with them in the 1851 census. Annie married Joseph CRITCHLEY in Eccles, Lancashire in 1867 and had four children in Preston. She died in 1935 in Clevelys, Lancashire. Joseph COCKERILL was born in Cloughton, Yorkshire in 1796 to William and Ruth (nee SPENCER). I have traced William to Scalby (1766). His father, John may have been born in Scalby in 1744 or may have been born in Hackness in 1735. The only evidence for the latter is the Marriage bond index, which gives age as 31 in 1766. Even if John was born in Scalby, it is likely that his ancestors came from Hackness as there is a large grouping there.
