History

Generation 1

Annie Hindley was born in 1887 in Winton, Lancashire. Her parents were Julius Augustus HINDLEY and Ellen (nee VALENTINE). The family moved from Lancashire, where 7 children were born, to Pyewipe, near Grimsby, Lincolnshire and then to Shirebrook, Derbyshire. Annie married Henry SHARPE in 1905 at the Roman Catholic chapel in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, probably the nearest Catholic church.

Julius Augustus was the 5th child of Thomas HINDLEY and Barbara (nee DITCHFIELD). The other children were Silas, Keziah Ditchfield, Eubulses, Cleophas, Keren Happuch, Agur Abner and Samuel Thomas Justus. They were non-conformists and most of the names are biblical. While most of the children were born around Culcheth, Lancashire, Cleophas and Julius Augustus were born in Manchester. Julius Augustus married Ellen VALENTINE in 1886 in Leigh and then Ada after 1907.

Thomas and Barbara were married in 1857 in Leigh, Lancashire. They may have separated after 1871 as in 1881 Barbara is living with 4 of the children, but Thomas is living elsewhere with Samuel, the youngest. By 1891, Thomas is living alone in Culcheth and Barbara is living with Agur in Bedford, Lancashire. In 1901 Barbara is living with her brother, Richard DITCHFIELD and Thomas is still living alone in Culcheth. Thomas died in 1904 and Barbara in 1905 in Leigh.

Thomas was baptised in 1826 in Culcheth, the son of Samuel HINDLEY and Margaret (nee SANKEY), who were married in 1821 in Warrington, Lancashire (now in Cheshire).

Samuel was baptised in 1797 in Lowton, Lancashire. His father was Thomas, but no mother is given in the baptism register.
