Origin of the surname

History

Generation 1

Elizabeth BENNETT was baptised in 1834 in Lowton, Lancashire. Her parents were Samuel BENNETT (shoemaker, 1808 - 1883) and Jane CROUCHLEY (1805-1842). Elizabeth married Edward CRITCHLEY in 1855 at Newton-in-Makerfield (now Newton le Willows, Lancashire). They moved to Bolton and had 8 sons and 2 daughters - the daughters died young, but the sons all married, though not all had children. Edward died in 1880 and Elizabeth in 1912.

Samuel was baptised in 1808 in Lowton. He married Jane CROUCHLEY and they had 7 children before she died aged only 36. With so many young children to look after, 10 months later Samuel married a young widow Mary CANE (nee WILLIAMSON) and they had a further 6 children. Unfortunately only 3 (or maybe 4) of Samuel's children married and 7 died before the age of 10.

The furthest I have got is with Elizabeth's grandfather, William, who was born about 1773 in Preston Brook, Cheshire. He was a shoemaker. He married Elizabeth, who came from Chester according to the 1851 census, but I do not know her surname or their marriage. They had 10 children

---------------

I also have an unrelated BENNETT family who also lived in Newton-in-Makerfield, headed by James and Mary. James was born about 1811 in Didsbury, south of Manchester, but seems to have moved to Newton before 1838 when their eldest son (and second child), Richard, was baptised.
